The CEDC is proud to partner with the Center of Concern, and joins them in celebration of their 40th anniversary of working for the causes of justice and peace in the world. Established in the Washington, D.C. neighborhood of Brookland where the CEDC is located, the two "Centers" have been partners since our inception in 1984.  The impact the Center of Concern has been able to have for social justice around the world has been monumental.

Moira Gunn noted in her plenary at the 2011 Nonprofit Technology Conference that sometimes important innovations occur in technology come through an alternate use of existing technology rather than in the development of new technologies. Of course, that’s not always the case. (“I will find a way to use bulky 8lb portable phones,” promised one attendee). Sometimes advances in technology go hand-in-hand with innovative ideas on how to use them.

In the fall of 2010, Sharon Lloyd of Seekers Church in Takoma Park, MD contacted CEDC regarding the opportunity to host a student coming to Washington DC from the Bokamoso Program, a partnership that is an international bridge between Washington, DC and Pretoria, South Africa.  The Bokamoso project state in its mission that it seeks “to transform the lives of youth and empower community leadership in Winterveldt, South Africa, by coordinating assistance with the Bokamoso Youth Centre and facilitating its sustainability through scholarship, training, and resource development.”

Our partner CFNCR gets a mention in the Post today:

"The success of our company has been because we give," Marriott, chairman and chief executive of Marriott International, said in an interview after accepting the Civic Spirit Award presented by the Community Foundation for the National Capital Region at the Ritz-Carlton in Georgetown. "We're here to help people pull themselves up."

The foundation, which holds and manages more than 700 charitable funds created by individuals, families and corporations, gave $54 million to nonprofits this year.

Our partners at TckTckTck have garnered some attention for the "Beds are Burning" video they released yesterday: "a re-mix of the mega-hit 'Beds are Burning', recorded by over 60 artists and celebrities, and re-written by Midnight Oil themselves to reflect the greatest humanitarian crisis facing humankind today - climate change."

Friendship school students meet President Obama

On March 24th, President Obama placed a phone call to the astronauts on the International Space Station and Friendship School students were there! Friendship Public Charter School has been a long-time parter with CEDC and we were excited to read that some middle school students from Friendship were invited to be present during the phone call.
